Navigating the Unstructured Summer: A Parent’s Guide to Keeping Our Youth Safe in West Seneca & Orchard Park

Summer is officially here! As parents, we want our kids to enjoy every second of this freedom. However, the shift from highly structured school days to unstructured summer hours brings a unique set of challenges. Without the routine of classes, sports, and daily check-ins, the door can swing open to unwanted risks—particularly youth substance use.

At the Substance Free Coalition of West Seneca & Orchard Park, we talk to parents every day who are trying to balance giving their teens independence with keeping them safe. This summer, we want to share some info to keep on your radar: recognizing the subtle shifts in your child and knowing how to step in early if something feels off.

Spotting the Subtle Shifts: Summer Warning Signs

It is normal for kids to sleep in later, try out new fashion trends, or hang out with different crowds over the summer. But sometimes, these changes point to something deeper. Because summer routines are more relaxed, substance use can easily masquerade as "just typical teen summer behavior."

Keep an eye out for these indicators:

  • Drastic Mood and Behavioral Swings: Uncharacteristic irritability, sudden secretiveness, or a defensive attitude when you ask simple questions about their day.

  • A Shift in Social Circles: If your teen completely drops their long-term friends for a brand-new group and becomes intensely protective of who they are spending time with, it is worth a closer look.

  • Physical and Routine Red Flags: Bloodshot eyes, sudden changes in appetite or weight, unusual lethargy that goes beyond "sleeping in," or a sudden, unexplained need for more cash.

  • The Disappearing Act: Spending hours locked in their room or staying out late without clear, verifiable plans.

If you notice these signs, try not to panic or jump straight to accusations. Instead, view it as an invitation to lean in and start a direct, calm conversation.

The Power of Early Intervention with the SFC: Stepping In Before It Escalates

If you discover or strongly suspect your child is experimenting with alcohol, vaping, or other substances, contact us for an early intervention. Catching substance use in its earliest stages drastically reduces the risk of long-term dependency or dangerous accidents. You do not have to wait until there is a severe crisis to act.
