Is My Child at Risk of Developing an Addiction?

The Substance Free Coalition of West Seneca and Orchard Park

There are several factors that can increase an individual's risk for addiction. Here are some potential risk factors to consider:

  • Family history: Individuals with a family history of addiction may be more likely to develop an addiction.

  • Personal history: Individuals who have a personal history of mental health conditions or trauma may be more vulnerable to addiction.

  • Peer pressure: Individuals who spend time with peers who engage in substance use may be more likely to experiment with drugs or alcohol.

  • Stress: Individuals who experience chronic stress or have difficulty coping with stress may be more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope.

  • Genetics: Some studies suggest that genetic factors may contribute to an individual's risk for addiction.

  • Environment: Individuals who grow up in environments where drug or alcohol use is normalized may be more likely to develop an addiction.

It's important to remember that having one or more of these risk factors does not necessarily mean that an individual will develop an addiction. However, being aware of these risk factors can help individuals make informed decisions about their substance use and seek help if necessary.

If you're concerned about your risk for addiction, it may be helpful to speak with a mental health professional or addiction specialist who can provide more guidance and support. The SFC has numerous resources, please do not hesitate to reach out!
